Weekend Studio Update from She's Batty Designs

It was a really busy weekend in the studio and I was barely online at all! I thought I'd take a picture on Saturday and Sunday so you could see what I was up to. There was a TON of crafting going on trying to get ready for the craft show this week called "Craft Off The Lot" in Toronto. It runs for 4 days, Thursday through Sunday. I just got an invitation to participate at the end of October so I've been madly trying to get enough cards together for a 4 day long event! It's been tough because I'm right in the middle of mid-terms at university. Thankfully my man pitched in and got crafty too! I couldn't have got so much done with out him :)

Do You Love Alice?

Here's a couple of my journals made using vintage images from an old children's book. The book was in bad shape so I salvaged what I could for a variety of projects. You can view them and other journals at my studio, Patzee's Crafts and More.

New destash store

I'm a little dizzy, not knowing what direction to go in lately. New things are coming to my shops. I've started scrapbook page kits. The pieces are all there--just assemble to your liking. I've also been stocking paper bag albums and tags.

My newest venture is http://bbgscrapsupplies.etsy.com. It's paper craft supply and destash. Now to take pics and fill the shop!

Fall is here, and with it come the allergies, cold and flu. I've personally been battling for 3 weeks and now all the children are sick. On the plus side, I'm kind of stuck indoors so I can get lots done! There are a few more craft shows to do and even with the destash store, I still have plenty of supplies to use up.

Until next post, keep warm and healthy!

Heather:)

Winter's Song

I am going to try something a little different…self-promotion. During now and the middle of November I will be preparing for an arts festival. And with that preparation comes new creations.

This first creation came about as a result of one technique called “Terraza Tones” from the TechniqueJunkies Newsletter. Thanks to Terri with Cards and Moore by Terri for turning me into a TechniqueJunkie. You can find subscription information at http://techniquejunkies.com/. These newsletters are fantastic and well worth your time. They will keep the creative juices flowing. The beautiful Southwest stamp was created by I Brake for Stamps. Check this site out. Her stamps are creative, wonderful, deeply etched, and just the right size! I don’t need anymore rubber stamps! But my addiction is so strong and uncontrollable!

This 5”x7” greeting card was so much fun to make! The “Terraza Tones” is created using instant coffee. I had nothing in the house other than drip. I tried that and could not accomplish the depth in color that I wanted. So my wonderful husband went to the store for me and purchased Chase and Sanborne instant coffee. Much, much better. The close up photo below will show the depth. You can control the strength of instant coffee. All the brown in this piece is the instant coffee. I do want to try and find the Terraza coffee. This coffee is a high-end instant coffee and hopefully it will be in gourmet shops.

The base card is a gorgeous Stardream metallic oyster color card stock. Other stocks I have used are watercolor paper and metallic copper card stock. Color enhancements are optional, but I used Twinks watercolors, copic markers, and copper ultra fine glitter. I have even used an unbleached coffee filter.

The stamp (central image) is stamped with black pigment ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. The piece of ivory stock that the central image is mounted on has been accented with copper pigment ink and embossed with clear embossing powder.

More self-promotion…I have Winter’s Song for sale in all of my online shops/studios. Here are the links:

She's Batty over Halloween

I cannot believe that it is October 1, 2009, already! We have 30 days until one of my favorite holidays is here, Halloween. Obsessed with Halloween, I am not…Jamie with She’s Batty Designs has that area of obsession covered.

Jamie describes herself as a “star-gazing, animal-loving, Halloween-obsessed, creative kind-of-gal.” Take a look at her Halloween creations in both of her online shops. I have thrown in other creation photos to show that she has other obsessions also. She’s not totally batty!

Enjoy fellow creators! Let Jamie know your obsessions also.

Happy Halloween!

How did you get your start in the world of art?
I've always had a love affair with arts and crafts. It's hard to pin point the exact time when my works started to take a real form because it's been a lifelong process which is continuously evolving.

Do you have a ritual you perform before you start creating?
Not really. When deciding on a new creation, the supplies I have on hand, and what I'm currently trying to create are all I need to get started. Half of the time I walk into my studio without a pre-determined project in mind. Other times I walk in with a vague concept like “Halloween Tags.” What is created from there depends on the supplies I have on hand. I focus on one holiday at a time, so for a few months the tables in my studio are covered with Halloween supplies or Christmas supplies, etc.

What do you like best, the creative process or the final creation?
That's an interesting question. I've actually never been asked that before. I like both stages, but I don't always like them on the same day. Some days I'm really in the mood to create, problem solve, and piece things together. Other days I'd rather enjoy a piece after I've moved passed all the “thinking stuff” and am sharing it with others.

What are your favorite art media, tools, and supplies?
I dabble in a lot of different crafts. Paper crafting, print making, sculpture, and photography are my passions. I have dabbled in film making, painting, and candle making. I would love to develop my skills in these areas. I’m also really inspired by soap makers! I haven’t tired out that craft at all and would love to really get into it!

I have two favourite supplies currently in my studio. I couldn’t pick just one and you’ll know why after I mention them. They are my Gocco printer and my Big Shot die cutter. They are both huge in my creative process - for their own reasons – and I would hate to be without them.

When a creative block happens, what process do you go through to get the creative juices flowing again?
If I have a creator's block it's usually not due to being out of ideas or supplies, it usually because of fatigue. I only get short bursts of energy due to having Ankylosing Spondylitis, so when I have the energy, I do a lot of creating! When I don't, I spend a lot of time online listing my items, surfing around for inspiration, and talking with other artists on Plurk and the AF forums. Although this cycle is not ideal from a health stand point, it really works well to keep away creator's block! When I'm creating, I'm solely focus on that, and when I'm drained of energy, I'm solely focused getting passive inspiration and doing the less creative tasks of online selling. I used to get depressed about not having the energy to create more, but I've realized over the last few years, that taking a different perspective about my whole situation has really helped me to be super productive when I DO have the chance to create.

What do you hope your art says about you?
I hope it says I enjoyed making it and took the time to make it right.

What is your greatest dream and greatest fear as an artist?
My biggest dream is that I'd be able to pursue my creative endeavors full time, and on my own schedule. My biggest fear is that I will cease to enjoy making my creations by turning their production into “work.”

What are your goals in art, and in life?
I would love to see my Artfire studio flourish. A goal of mine for this year is to get my Artfire studio established and add a variety of products (not just paper products). Over the next two years I hope that my Artfire studio is bringing in enough business to be a steady supplementary income. My overall goal is to ensure that I’m always loving the crafts that I’m doing and never loosing site of the joy they bring me. In life, I hope to bring my loved ones and much joy as they bring me.

Tell us a little bit about yourself—where you grew up, your life now, other creative pursuits, other interests and hobbies.
I live in Ontario, Canada. This is where I've grown up and plan to stay. I am a small business owner, avid crafter, university student, and the editor for the Marketing Department of HandmadeNews.org. My passions include creative expression, animal welfare, and psychology. I am currently finishing a Bachelors Degree in Psychology with a minor in Visual Arts. I have also studied Fine Art and Animal Care at college. As you can see, continuous learning is a force that drives me. You could say I am an information junkie! My favorite creative outlets include photography, crafts (paper, candle making, etc), printmaking and sculpture. I devote a lot of time to my rescue animals - I have 3 dogs (my fuzzy babies) and a turtle. They, along with the love of my life, often steal my attention away from other tasks. If you have been following me online for any amount of time, I am sure you have come to realize that I absolutely love Halloween. It is by far my favorite holiday and extends its reach into my home decor, my small business, and even my wardrobe. My favorite movie is The Nightmare Before Christmas. I also have a soft spot for cheesy '80s movies. Something else a few of you may have picked up on is that I have Ankylosing Spondylitis. I am a self-staring optimist that helps me cope and keep going in the face of chronic pain. Life is too short not to try to enjoy each and every day.

Do you have an online shop or shops, a brick and mortar shop, or a blog?
I have a blog and two online shops. My blog can be found at http://shesbattydesigns.blogspot.com and my two shops can be found at http://shesbattydesigns.artfire.com and http://shesbattydesigns.etsy.com.

A New Kind of Custom

Hi People! I wanted to tell you a little story. I got a phone call the other day from a darling Mom who ordered a bag tag from me recently for her daughter. She had also sent me a note through my e-commerce site asking if I would be interested in creating a birthday invitation for her daughter. There were only going to be 8 invites. What did I care if there were only 8! Of course I was interested. A few days went by and I finally heard from her. (BTW, it had taken me a few days to get back to her since I had not looked on that email in quite a while.) We were gabbing away like old chums, but when she was delighting in telling me how her daughter loved to draw and how she had a nice little portfolio going already, I stopped her right there in mid conversation! "Wait!" I demanded. (quiet on the other side. She was probably thinking.. sheesh!) So I said to her, "How about if your daughter draws what she wants for her invite and you send me the art and I put it into invitation form?" She looooved the idea! I was pretty proud of myself. I don't think that this is an original idea, but it's generally not done, I don't think. I also had a big craft fair coming up and needed every free second I had. I felt it would benefit all of us if Nicole could use her own art for her Spa/Slumber Party and I could get my bearings here for this fair. I got the art.. actually 5 pieces. They are from a program called Fashion Design Pad. I think this is how it works; her daughter, Nicole, creates the face with hair color, eyes, lips, nose..the whole shebang on the computer. She then colors clothes onto the little computer models. She happened to send me a blond, a brunette and an Asian. I used all three and had them hold hands. Her wonderful Mom sent me a base for text and I changed it around a bit and then we finalized it over the phone when she got her proof. Here is the result. Isn't it cute?

AND, to save time, I made out the envelopes with green marker and added cute gift stickers next to her guests names. It turned out so adorably! This is truly why I love what I do. Personalizing things in a non- traditional manner is so much fun for me. And also, being an artist who doesn't enjoy repetition, this was right up my alley. Everyone was happy.. I can't wait for Nicole to get her envelope!

Pink Saturday on September 12, 2009

Welcome to my sixth edition of Pink Saturday.

This has been an interesting week for me. I guess I should say that Wednesday, Sept. 9, was very interesting. It got interesting (to me any way) when I finally sat down to think about it. It was my 56th birthday. No surprise there, except now I have to get use to the fact that I will be 57 next year. My thoughts were that all the people out in our world who’s birthday was on Sept. 9, 2009, or 09/09/09, did they realize that this date would not happen again for another 1000 years? This is something that took me time to wrap my little brain around. Yep, I’m weird, but that’s the way I wired. My husband asked me what I wanted to do on my special day. I came up with this...I wanted to go see the movie “9” at 9:00 p.m. Not only would that movie be “eye-candy” for an artist (it had a great message also), I felt like I was celebrating those birthdays that are going to happen 1000 years from now.

Okay, I have stopped rambling. Let's get going with Pink Saturday. This edition is going to highlight four shops from my ArtFire Passion for Paper Guild. I hope you enjoy the pink and check out their online ArtFire shops.

The Art and Collections of Pat Labella

“Paper artist... altered art crafter... thrift store and vintage junkie... health conscious baby boomer... Buffalo native now living in the Vegas desert,” Pat Labella

I usually try to write about what I feel from an artist’s work, their passions, their love of life, their medium, but after reading Pat’s biography from her online shops, I could not write it any better. I have decided to quote from those biographies. Why try to edit or rewrite something that needs no editing or rewriting?

Her biography from her VintageIntent shop states…”Collections come and collections go. Once the excitement of the hunt wears off, it's on to something new. I search, I find, I enjoy. Then I move on. Oh, there are a few collections that I'll probably keep forever, but for the most part, I'll eventually turn them over to someone else to enjoy…Garage sales were a weekly tradition where I could find wonderful antiques and older collectibles. Now that I've moved to the sunny southwest I travel around to the three or four thrift stores on a weekly basis, and sometimes I get lucky. Through this studio I'm now able to pass some of these treasures on to you.” (You get my drift.)

I will say that you need to check out all her blogs especially the Better Bones blog. Read the Dog’s Prayer. We have always had pets. At one time we had three cats and three dogs. We now have one cat and two dogs. Her blog tugged at my heart strings. Those memories will never fade.

Enjoy this interview. And let her know your passions in life.

How did you get your start in the world of art?
I have been crafting since I was a little girl. I remember making cards, clay projects, knitting, crocheting, and making candles with my mother. I was always saving throw-aways that I thought might be used for some creative expressions. But it wasn't until about 10 years ago that I took this hobby seriously and began crafting in earnest, for myself, and to offer my creations on line. I started selling my vintage inspired greeting cards on Etsy and Ebay, and have since expanded my inventory to include many other projects that I enjoy. I love using paper and recycled objects in my artwork. That has never changed. The interests of that little girl many years ago are still surfacing in my modern day crafting.

Do you have a ritual you perform before you start creating?
Well, I don't always have the neatest studio, so I usually have to clean up from my last project prior to starting a new one!

What do you like best, the creative process or the final creation?
Both. I love formulating a design in my head, but when I start working, the project usually morphs into something that is no where near my original concept. The final creation is often a pleasant surprise.

What are your favorite art media, tools, and supplies?
That's a tough question, because I'm a gadget junkie. I love working with paper, so I have 3 different die cut tools - Spellbinder Wizard is my favorite, followed closely by Quikutz and my little Sisix Sidekick. I have three sizes of Xyron machines to fit any size paper I want (would you believe I'm thinking about a 4th!). My newest gadget is the Zutter Bind-it-All.

When a creative block happens, what process do you go through to get the creative juices flowing again?
I usually figure it's just time to back off and do something else for a while. There's always work around the house, shopping for new craft supplies, reading craft books, and watching the food network! After a while, new ideas start popping up and I'm back in the swing.

What do you hope your art says about you?
I try to infuse my love of life into all my work. I often use subtle or off beat humor in my creations.

What is your greatest dream and greatest fear as an artist?
No fears - I do what I like. As for a dream - I'd love to have a studio large enough to be able to leave everything out in the open to play whenever I want.

What are your goals in art, and in life?
As I look forward to retirement, I realize many of my life goals have been reached. Education, marriage, family and career. But this is certainly not a time to sit back and reflect on the past without looking forward to the future as well. I live a lifestyle that will hopefully keep me healthy and active for the next 30 or more years. I still would like to start my own business in the pet or craft marketplace. And there's still plenty of places I'd like to visit.

Tell us a little bit about yourself—where you grew up, your life now, other creative pursuits, other interests and hobbies.
I was born in Buffalo, New York. Western New York is actually a beautiful area with gorgeous summers and winters filled with cold weather fun. Skiing and ice skating were great! I lived in the area for 50 years - graduated collage with a BS in Medical Technology, married and raised a family there. Then we did a complete turn around and moved to Las Vegas in 1999.

I love all kinds of animals. We've always had dogs and/or cats. We presently have our 6th Siberian Husky and tropical fish. I work full time in a hospital lab. I enjoy cooking with natural foods and try to keep my physical activity up by exercising, biking and power walking.

Do you have more than one shop(s), and/or a blog?
I have 4 blogs:

http://yearsdontcount.blogspot.com
http://betterbones.blogsppot.com

I have 4 shops:

Recycled Paper Notebooks

- by CardsByPatzee

I've been playing with my handmade paper and recycled elements lately and have come up with a couple of interesting journals. This first notebook is recycled from a vintage book of "daily thoughts". There are 50 recycled pages with many inspirational thoughts dispersed and lots of room for notes or drawings. The front and back covers are cut from recycled corrugated cardboard. Mounted on the front cover is a swatch of handmade paper recycled from sewing patterns, with a stamped quote. Only the wire binding is not recycled.

This second journal is filled with 20 sheets of my handmade paper recycled from scraps and junk mail. The front cover is a recycled heavy weight calendar picture and the back cover is recycled cardboard.

I have many more unique notepads and journals for you to see at my Cards 'N More studio.

ArtbyJean ... The Blog: Journal for my artistic grandson.
Better late than never. My grandson's birthday was yesterday. Just finished this journal for him. Will see him on Thursday. Plywood covers, art paper, string bookmark.

Welcome someone to their new lake home.

I love to do cards you just don't see on the market. This one is a series of three. The picture is of the lakehome card. Another one is for a new cabin owner and the third is the home in the woods. Each has a unique look. I hope you enjoy the warm thoughts in this card.

My cards are made one at a time, and often the only card in the set. But these cards were special order so more were created.

"One-of-a-Kind" creations from Jenna

If you want “one-of-a-kind” greeting cards, you need to visit Jenna’s shop. Her flair and creativity for color and layout really stands out in her art. My decision on the photos was hard to make. I usually pick out a few of my favorite, but all of Jenna’s work was my favorite. Visit her shops on ArtFire and Etsy and form your own opinions. Her blog is also worth the visit and the follow.

Enjoy!

How did you get your start in the world of art?
A few years back, I had a birthday party to go to and went shopping for the gift and card. I didn't see anything I liked! It was at that point I figured I should just make my own. I use to scrapbook on a regular basis so I had all the supplies! With the craziness of life and not having much space to spread out my work, it was hard to complete a scrapbook without spending gobs of time on it. For me making greeting cards is gratifying in the sense that I can complete a card in a small amount of time.
My cards started out very simple in design. After many experimental projects I found that hand stamped and embellished type cards are my favorite to make. Now I always hand make my greeting cards. Not only was I giving someone a unique greeting card but it was also personalized. It always makes someone feel good to give them something handmade and from the heart.

Do you have a ritual you perform before you start creating?
No ritual to speak of. I tend to design cards based on my mood.

What do you like best, the creative process or the final creation?
I love the creative process. The final creation always gives me a sense of accomplishment but it's the process that truly is the fun part.

What are your favorite art media, tools, and supplies?
This is a tough question for me to answer! I really love everything that I work with. However, if I had to pick my favorite material would be paper. Paper is what makes a card and is the foundation for each of my creations. I absolutely love handmade and glittery type papers. My favorite tool is my Fiskars rotary paper cutter. It is the best paper cutter I have come across and I bought it at Michaels with a 50% off coupon, you can't beat that! Swapping the blades in and out is super easy and you can even get blades that cut patterns, like waves and scallops.

When a creative block happens, what process do you go through to get the creative juices flowing again?
If I experience a creative block I have to stop and walk away from the crafting table. Crafting isn't enjoyable if you are frustrated. The last thing I want to do is be frustrated with myself over a hobby I love.

What do you hope your art says about you?
I believe my cards say that I am not only creative, but also warm and caring. I enjoy making cards for the people in my life.

What is your greatest dream and greatest fear as an artist?
My greatest dream would be that I get contacted by Hallmark about buying a card idea of mine. I don't really have any fears except for maybe burning my hand with the glue gun or getting a paper cut.

What are your goals in art, and in life?
My goals in art are to have fun and come up with new creative card ideas.

Tell us a little bit about yourself—where you grew up, your life now, other creative pursuits, other interests and hobbies.
My name is Jenna and I live in Issaquah, WA just outside the big city of Seattle. I am a Washington native, born and raised. Currently I work in real estate and love helping people buy and sell their homes. My hobbies include cooking, reading, scrapbooking, gardening, spending time with family/friends, and card making! I live with my boyfriend and we have two adorable kitties. I love papery things and have a huge collection which I use to create my masterpieces (at least I think each card is a masterpiece!). It is a wonderful past time and hobby for me. I've been a member of Etsy since February 2007 and have been selling since May 2007. I joined the ArtFire community last year in November and hope to make this my number one online store.

Dreams of a paper lover!

Nancy, I did cut that name out with a scroll saw, but what I really want is a laser cutter. I dream about having a laser cutter ... Only problem is the one I want costs about AU $13,000.00 ... thankfully, dreams don't cost!

Never mind, God is preparing a place for me right now with a "vision controlled" laser cutter, that will cut ANYTHING! The top of the heaven range in embroidery machines, a printers guillotine and all the latest arts & craft gadgets that ever were invented. All in a ten acre workshop full of paper & craft supplies at my disposal. Instantly stocked and re-stocked (of course) by the imagination! Just think of it and it's there! ... Not to mention the mile long work benches and the little elves that work 24/7 to clean up all my mess. And, (and this is very important) there will NEVER EVER be any dust!

You are all invited to visit me there as soon as Jesus returns!

I just listed a new journal... see the details on my blog

Finished this one last night! See all the details on my Blog!

Handmade Paper Tags

My new Spellbinders tag die just arrived and I was quick to cut these tags from my own handmade paper! Embellished with gold pigment stamping and colorful yarn fibers, they turned out great. You can find them as well as my paper, at CardsByPatzee. I'll be adding more as I make more paper!

Gifted Journal

I have not had the time to do many journals during the past few weeks, but I did get one finished as a gift for my son Peter. The covers are made with pine wood offcuts that (as I have already mentioned) I collected years. My sons were not very impressed when I asked them to move literally hundreds of bits of wood from my old house to my new old house. I've been living here for about 6 years now and finally I am finding good use for them.

Here is my new journal: Name cut with a scroll saw and attached with two decorative upholstery tacks.

POP-UP CARDS

I was in a rut, making normal, everyday cards. Then I decided to do some desk accessories, i.e., decorated index file dividers. I made a set of monthly dividers and two sets of 6 dividers each. I don't know how I got that idea, but it was fun and broke the monotony of my "plain' cards. Then I decided that I needed to step out of the comfort zone and challenge myself to do more than the normal, everyday cards. I started card making about 12 years ago when I sold rubber stamps on the party plan. I loved it! I had so much fun and made all of our Christmas cards for several years(read 100 of the same card!). Then I quit selling rubber stamps because I wanted to use other stamps than the brand I sold, and I was getting into scrapbooking. Then I bought a flower shop...that put all of my paper crafting on hold... Several life changes happened during that time and now I am on disability and do my Etsy and ArtFire shops and as much paper crafting as I can when I am feeling well.

My "challenge" of late was the pop-up cards. Now I've done several - I used to do all kinds of stuff so after these I'll choose another challenge for myself. I've listed these for sale in my ArtFire shop, THE CHICKADEES NEST (http://thechickadeesnest.artfire.com/) and my Etsy shop THE MAIL BAG (http://themailbag.etsy.com/). I've posted a few pics.

This one is made from little birdhouses cut from a piece of discarded printing paper. I love the little houses.

I think it might be my favorite of the pop-ups I just made this week.
This one is mighty colorful! The little gifts were cut from a background paper. I don't have my rubber stamps anymore so I have to find things to cut out to put on my cards.

Some of the gifts and the birdhouses were applied with the thick tape dots to give the cards dimension.

Journal 37 - Scrapbook with Wood covers with lots of lovely beads.

I finished this journal yesterday. One of a set that I am making with pine timber offcuts that I collected years ago. This time I added a small brass plaque that says "Dream". Then lots and lots of wood beads, some painted, some plain wood and these are mixed with handmade paper beads that have gold thread highlights embedded under the varnish. At the back of the spine the stitching cords are double crossed to add stability to the book and the page sections are spaced with wood beads so you have lots and lots of room to add photos and clippings before the book starts to expand too much. If you look closely at the photos you can see where the beads are placed at the back of the spine to space the page sections. There are 16 strings of beads on this scrapbook journal which are so lovely to touch and play with in your hands. They are quite light in weight .... what can I say ... the are just lovely!
